When and Why Was Basilica Cistern Built?


Basilica Cistern was commissioned by Emperor Justinian I and constructed by Byzantine engineers and laborers during the sixth century. Its construction is associated with the major rebuilding projects carried out in Constantinople during Justinian’s reign.

The Historic Peninsula had limited freshwater sources. Byzantine engineers therefore developed a network of aqueducts, distribution channels and underground reservoirs.

Why Is It Called Basilica Cistern?

In the Roman and Byzantine world, a basilica could be a public hall used for legal, commercial or administrative purposes. The cistern inherited the name of the building associated with the site above it.

Its popular nickname, the “Sunken Palace,” describes the palace-like appearance of hundreds of columns beneath a vaulted ceiling. It was never an underground royal residence.

How Did Basilica Cistern Store Water?


Water entered the cistern through the wider hydraulic network serving Constantinople. Thick brick walls coated with waterproof mortar retained the water, while the vaulted roof protected it from sunlight, debris, contamination and rapid evaporation.

Its underground location helped maintain stable conditions. Water could then be distributed through pipes and channels to buildings in the imperial district.

Basilica Cistern was not an isolated monument. It formed part of a much larger water network supporting Constantinople’s population and imperial center.

From Byzantine Reservoir to Ottoman Istanbul


During the Byzantine period, the cistern served the political and ceremonial center of Constantinople. Its location near Hagia Sophia, the Hippodrome and the Great Palace made it an important part of the city’s infrastructure.

After the Ottoman conquest of 1453, Istanbul’s water system gradually changed. The Ottomans generally preferred flowing water delivered through fountains and newer distribution networks, but the cistern remained intact.

It was never completely forgotten. Residents living above it reportedly drew water through underground openings and occasionally caught fish.

How Petrus Gyllius Documented the Cistern


French scholar Petrus Gyllius explored Constantinople during the 1540s. After learning that local residents could draw water from beneath their homes, he entered the cistern, measured its columns and recorded its scale.

His writings introduced Basilica Cistern to European scholars. It is more accurate to say that he documented the monument for Western scholarship rather than discovered a place completely unknown to local residents.

The Medusa Heads and Their Legends


Two ancient Medusa heads are used as column bases in the northwestern section of the cistern. One is positioned upside down, while the other is placed sideways.

Their original location and exact date are unknown, but they were probably reused from an earlier Roman building or monument.

Legends claim that the stones were turned to neutralize Medusa’s mythological power. However, no surviving historical document confirms this interpretation.

The most practical explanation is that Byzantine builders positioned the stones in whichever direction provided the correct height and stable support for the columns.

The Weeping Column


Another recognizable feature is the Weeping Column, also known as the Tear Column or Hen’s Eye Column.

Its carved surface resembles tears, eyes, plant forms or peacock feathers. A popular story claims that it commemorates workers who died during construction, but there is no reliable historical evidence confirming this explanation.

Its decoration resembles architectural elements associated with the Forum of Theodosius, suggesting that the column may also have been reused from an earlier Roman monument.

How Basilica Cistern Became a Museum


By the twentieth century, Basilica Cistern required extensive cleaning and structural repairs. Mud and debris had accumulated inside, while modern development above the cistern placed additional pressure on the ancient structure.

The 1987 Restoration


A major restoration completed in 1987 introduced raised visitor walkways. Visitors could then see the Medusa heads, Weeping Column, brick vaults and reflected columns without travelling through the cistern by boat.

The 2020–2022 Conservation Project
